Total value locked in Ethereum Layer 2 networks falls to $5B

Share

The total value locked across Ethereum Layer 2 networks has dropped to approximately $5 billion, down from over $48 billion earlier in 2026, representing a decline of more than $43 billion. Arbitrum, Base, and Optimism, which collectively held more than $35 billion at the start of the year, now account for only a fraction of that sum. This contraction comes as Ethereum had over 73 active rollups as of April 2026, raising questions about market fragmentation. For context, Ethereum mainnet DeFi TVL stood at approximately $41 billion as of late July 2026, roughly eight times the current amount across the entire L2 ecosystem. Governance tokens like ARB and OP now face difficult valuation questions, as their fundamental value is closely tied to economic activity on their respective chains.
