BlackRock targets Apollo, Blackstone, and Blue Owl in private credit with $220B war chest

BlackRock completed its acquisition of HPS Investment Partners in July 2025, bringing its private credit assets under management to approximately $220 billion. In March 2026, the asset manager capped redemptions on its HLEND fund at 5% per quarter after receiving $1.2 billion in withdrawal requests of which only $620 million were approved. This decision positions BlackRock as a direct competitor to Apollo, Blackstone, and Blue Owl in the private credit sector, a market that has expanded significantly since traditional banks withdrew following the 2008 financial crisis. The asset management giant anticipates substantial opportunities in asset-based financing and high-grade corporate credit for 2026.
