Warner Bros.’ film « Digger », starring Tom Cruise as an aging oil tycoon and directed by Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu, opened to just $8 million at the domestic box office. With a production budget that ballooned from $125 million to $180 million and roughly $100 million in marketing costs, the film needs to gross about $350 million worldwide to break even. After two weekends, it has earned only $35.3 million globally, roughly a tenth of the break-even threshold. Variety projects a $245 million loss, putting it alongside notorious flops like « John Carter » and « The Marvels ». The disaster comes just before Paramount Skydance’s $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. closes.
