In 2008, Fortune introduced Tim Cook as the under-the-radar figure who might one day succeed Steve Jobs as Apple CEO, describing him as a “genius” and an “operations wizard” but also a “blank slate” to the public. Cook resisted the notion at the time: “Replace Steve? No. He’s irreplaceable.” When Jobs stepped down in 2011 and died shortly after, Cook took full control of Apple and by 2015, the company had grown richer, bigger, and more ambitious under his leadership. Unlike his formidable, combustible predecessor, Cook established himself as a pragmatic and measured leader, yet equally visionary.
