Block, Jack Dorsey’s company, has joined the x402 Foundation and added Bitcoin Lightning Network to the x402 payment protocol. The x402 standard, developed under the Linux Foundation by Coinbase, enables an AI agent to pay for a web resource without an account or API key by reviving the old HTTP 402 “Payment Required” code. Block joins Google, Microsoft, AWS, Coinbase, and the Solana Foundation as supporters of the foundation. Steve Lee, who leads Spiral, Block’s Bitcoin initiative, presented Lightning as the ideal rail for the billions of micropayments that AI agents will generate. Over the past thirty days, x402 recorded approximately 75 million transactions and 24 million dollars in volume, without specific Lightning Network figures being disclosed.
