Bridget Griswold, 25, CEO of the nonprofit women’s empowerment organization Lean In, said at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women conference in Santa Barbara that the broken rung represents one of the most persistent problems women face in their careers. This phenomenon refers to the first promotion from entry-level to manager, with only 93 women promoted for every 100 men at the entry level in 2025. For Black women, the situation is even more critical with only 60 promotions for every 100 men. Bridget Griswold was appointed CEO by Sheryl Sandberg, former COO of Meta and founder of Lean In, after a brief stint as a product manager at Meta. She emphasized that women should not have to wait for their turn to lead, and that her young age allows her to be fearless and trust her leadership team.
