Ten Japanese footballers to play in Premier League this season, a record for any Asian nation

The 2026/27 season marks a historic record with ten Japanese footballers playing in the Premier League, the highest number ever achieved by any single Asian nation. This figure has nearly doubled from the four or five players recorded the previous season. Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki joined Aston Villa from Parma for approximately 35 million euros, demonstrating the growing market value of Japanese talent. Five of these ten players are making their Premier League debuts this season, with Wataru Sakamoto set to feature in the season opener with newly promoted Coventry City on August 21. By comparison, South Korea, long considered Japan’s footballing rival in Asia, has zero representation in the league this season.
