Strategy turns MSCI’s own SEC words against its $24 billion MSTR threat

Strategy accuses MSCI of inconsistency in its proposed methodology to exclude companies holding digital assets from equity indexes. The firm points out that MSCI told the SEC in 2022 that an index provider expresses no view on whether an investment is good or bad, yet its new screen for non-operating assets would require classifying Bitcoin as operating or non-operating. According to Strategy’s figures, its float-adjusted market capitalization represents 86.9%, or approximately $23.9 billion, of the $27.5 billion total affected by the proposal. MSCI’s public consultation ends September 30, with a decision expected by October 16 at the latest. Strategy has also asked MSCI to preserve all documents related to the development of this asset classification test.
