On August 31, the Pentagon announced the integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok into its GenAI.mil platform, making these tools available to more than 3 million Department of Defense personnel for unclassified work. These two chatbots, branded as ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, received Impact Level 5 security accreditation, authorizing them to handle controlled unclassified information. Launched in December 2025 with Google’s Gemini, GenAI.mil has already attracted over 1.7 million unique users in just nine months. Use cases remain deliberately mundane: administrative work, logistics coordination, planning, and analytical tasks, with no connection to targeting or classified systems. For xAI, this deployment represents a major milestone positioning Elon Musk’s company as a credible defense technology provider.
