South Korean President Lee Jae-myung announced in New York on September 23 a plan to double semiconductor production capacity within five years. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix have committed a combined investment exceeding 800 trillion won, roughly 518 to 520 billion dollars, for four new memory fabrication plants. Including AI data centers and two other megaprojects, total investment is expected to surpass 880 trillion to 1 quadrillion won. Samsung and SK hynix together already account for about two-thirds of global memory chip production. New fabs are planned for Yongin, Pyeongtaek, Honam, Gwangju region, and Chungcheong province.
