South Korea has decided to fine Google and Apple a combined 63.7 billion won, or about $48 million, over their in-app payment systems. Google faces approximately 42.9 billion won and Apple 20.8 billion won under a decision by the Korea Media and Communications Commission. Authorities accused the companies of forcing developers to use their proprietary systems, with effective fees of around 26% on third-party payments compared with their usual 30% commission. The investigation, opened in August 2022 following a reform that took effect in March 2022, was delayed by nearly three years of procedural proceedings. The decision could influence payment practices and competition in app marketplaces beyond South Korea.
