Apple is replacing some iPhone Duo units whose 7.6-inch inner display cracked along the hinge, sometimes only hours after purchase. iFixit found that the damage clusters near the central support bar, where a display cable crosses the mechanism, and identified inadequate retraction, pressure, trapped particles and manufacturing variances as possible causes. Dust testing showed that fine particles could reach the moving hinge despite the phone’s IP68 rating, while about 10 unique cases had been counted so far. Affected owners can receive a replacement without AppleCare+, but an out-of-warranty inner-screen repair would cost $999, compared with $419 to $579 for comparable Samsung and Google models.
