Anza announced the activation of Alpenglow on Solana’s main network on October 21, at slot 459,653,000, at around 14:00 UTC. Validators replaced the TowerBFT protocol without moving activity to a separate chain. According to Anza, the upgrade reduces the targeted finality time from approximately 12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds, but this is a design target rather than an independently reproduced network-wide measurement. Anza still plans to develop Rotor, a geographically aware leader rotation system, and Quantumglow, a post-quantum research design, with no committed release dates. How Alpenglow performs under real traffic and varying network conditions remains to be observed.
