A peer-reviewed study published in the journal Science found that Microsoft’s AI diagnostic system, MAI-DxO, achieved approximately 83% accuracy on complex cases from the New England Journal of Medicine. Generalist physicians scored between 22% and 36%, depending on their access to medical references. Across more than 300 emergency department cases, MAI-DxO reached 80% accuracy, compared with 47% for physicians with web access, while estimated diagnostic costs were up to 20% lower in some configurations. Microsoft plans to open-source the SDBench benchmark and begin real-world hospital testing in the coming months, following clinical validation and regulatory compliance.
