Ajay Shinjin, a 25-year-old London man, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for a SIM-swap fraud that stole nearly £200,000 worth of cryptocurrency. He received more than £44,000 of the stolen funds, which he spent on luxury holidays in Dubai, a high-end apartment in Canary Wharf, and gold-plated teeth grills. In November 2021, BT identified unauthorized activity on its systems that allowed criminals to transfer customer phone numbers to their own SIM cards to intercept one-time security codes. Shinjin was first arrested at his flat in 2021, then re-arrested at Heathrow Airport on October 18, 2023, upon his return from Dubai. Unauthorized SIM swap cases recorded in the UK’s National Fraud Database rose 402% in the first half of 2026.
