Shopify activated native WebMCP support across all its storefronts on August 5, enabling browser-based AI agents to search catalogs, manage carts, and complete purchases through structured commands. The implementation includes safeguards preventing AI agents from handling payment information and requiring explicit buyer consent before order finalization. The rollout requires zero merchant configuration, automatically deploying to all Liquid themes and the Hydrogen developer preview. WebMCP is currently running as a Chrome origin trial, limiting functionality to Chromium-based browsers such as Chrome, Edge, and Brave, excluding Safari and Firefox. Google and Microsoft have endorsed the WebMCP standard, adding institutional weight to the initiative.
