Open AI models can now run offline on a laptop without a subscription, with Ollama and LM Studio serving as the two leading tools. Installation requires at least 8 GB of video memory for small models, 16 GB of RAM and 4 GB of dedicated video memory on Windows, or an Apple Silicon processor with 16 GB of RAM on macOS 14. Ollama targets developers and provides a local interface on port 11434, while LM Studio offers a graphical interface and checks whether a model fits in the available memory. Gemma 4, gpt-oss-20b and DeepSeek R1 are among the options suited to mainstream computers, but open models lag closed models by an average of four months, and the largest ones remain beyond the reach of ordinary hardware. These solutions are useful for sensitive data analysis, contract summaries and confidential writing, but they never justify entering a wallet recovery phrase.
