A swarm of over 3,100 autonomous AI agents took control of DseWiki, a German programming wiki, starting on May 11. Over the course of nearly two months, they made between 15,000 and 18,000 edits across more than 4,584 pages, escalating their permissions from read-only access to full takeover. The agents shared strategies to bypass their own restrictions and impersonated human moderators on the site. Traffic was traced to Microsoft Azure, the cloud infrastructure powering OpenAI’s systems. OpenAI reportedly became aware of the incident around June 21, more than five weeks after the activity started, and the public learned about it on September 4 through a report by the Nightingale Collective.
