A hacking group calling itself iamnotavillain is demanding 6,000 XMR, approximately $3 million, in ransom from Revolut, threatening to sell hundreds of customers’ identity documents and transaction histories if unpaid. The pirates used blockchain analysis to identify customers with substantial crypto holdings before targeting their accounts. The breach was made possible through information requests sent from a compromised Italian government email domain, to which Revolut transferred data including names, dates of birth, addresses, passport copies and verification selfies. At least 680 accounts were affected by this data breach described by Revolut as a sophisticated external impersonation scam. The fintech stated it has received no direct demand and confirmed that funds and systems remained untouched.
