Proof of Play, an a16z-backed blockchain gaming studio, will cease operations after failing to prove that blockchain-based games could help usher in a decentralized internet at scale. The company will open-source Pirate Nation, its smart contracts and internal development tools. An independent foundation will continue supporting the PIRATE token and maintain its website, while Proof of Play points will no longer be redeemable. Founder Pirates NFTs and Pirate Nation intellectual property are now available under a CC0 license. At their peak, Proof of Play’s Apex and Boss networks were the two largest gas consumers across Ethereum’s entire rollup ecosystem.
