Polygon Plans Hard Fork to Seize $6.5 Million From Polymarket and Binance Hackers

Polygon developers have put to a community vote a Proof of Stake hard fork designed to recover 70.49 million POL tokens, valued at $6.5 million, stolen in two separate hacks at the end of October. The funds were spread across five wallets, including 23.86 million POL taken from Polymarket and 46.63 million from Binance. Despite validators blacklisting the addresses, the hackers have attempted to move the assets with transaction fees of up to 219,000 POL and have tried to bribe validators. If approved, a specific block will zero out the hackers’ balances and credit an equivalent amount to verified Binance and Polymarket wallets without issuing new tokens. After two weeks of testing, exchanges and node operators will have to update their software, while those refusing the change will be isolated on the old blockchain branch.
