According to Pablo Sabbatella, founder of Opsek, the attackers behind the Binance hack may have gained access to the exchange’s systems several weeks before moving any funds. The main transfer, involving approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets, reportedly took roughly 20 minutes across at least 10 blockchains after at least 36 hours of preparation. The likely entry point was a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer, from which the intruders reached a service container and authorized withdrawals. TRM Labs, Chainalysis, and the FBI have attributed the attack to the TraderTraitor group, which is associated with North Korea. Binance froze approximately $2.7 billion to $3 billion in stolen funds with the help of stablecoin issuers and says it will cover roughly 90% to 95% of the stolen assets using corporate funds and reserves.
