OpenAI’s Jalapeño chip, an inference accelerator developed with Broadcom, was named to TIME’s 2026 Best Inventions list on October 15, months before its first small-volume deployment planned for late 2026. This custom ASIC delivers up to 13.4 petaflops of 4-bit compute, with 232 GB of memory and 15.4 TB/s bandwidth, consuming 550 W sustained. Benchmarks published on August 25, 2026, showed the chip performing 1.5 to 1.9 times more AI work per watt than Nvidia systems. OpenAI targets roughly 50 % improvement in cost-per-token and per-kilowatt metrics, with a goal of reaching 10 gigawatts of capacity by 2029.
