OpenAI announced on August 7 that its upcoming Astra model had reached a « Critical » level in cybersecurity capabilities under its Preparedness Framework, a first for the company. This designation means Astra can autonomously discover and develop zero-day exploits in hardened systems, and execute comprehensive cyberattacks from high-level strategic goals. In response, OpenAI paused certain internal development work and implemented heightened security controls. The model has also demonstrated exceptional mathematical abilities, reportedly solving ten longstanding mathematical problems at a compute cost of roughly $2,000. As of early September 2026, Astra remains unreleased with no public API access or confirmed launch date.
