A Quinnipiac University poll conducted between September 24 and 27, 2026 found that 86% of US adults support requiring AI companies to meet safety standards, even if doing so slows technological progress. Among respondents, 91% said US AI guardrails are important, 81% chose safety over innovation, and 73% expressed concern that AI could threaten human survival. Additionally, 74% said they have little or no trust in AI companies to self-regulate. These findings are expected to complicate the position of industry and investors, who will need to factor in compliance costs if mandatory standards are introduced.
