President Donald Trump gathered the world’s most powerful tech executives at the White House on Tuesday to discuss the future of artificial intelligence. Apple was the notable absence from the lunch: neither Tim Cook nor his successor John Ternus attended, while leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Meta and Nvidia all signed an agreement on AI safety measures. Brad Gerstner, CEO of Altimeter Capital and a Trump ally, downplayed the absence, noting that Cook was at the White House less than a week earlier for the state dinner with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Apple’s approach to AI differs from other tech giants, with the company focusing on smaller, more efficient models for its consumer devices rather than the large frontier models developed by specialized labs.
