Morgan Stanley announced on September 29, 2026 the creation of a Digital Asset Lab, a dedicated structure to experiment with stablecoins, asset tokenization and decentralized finance (DeFi) in an isolated environment before any large-scale deployment. The structure, which integrates into the bank’s existing network of innovation laboratories, will also study tokenized deposits, central bank digital currencies and tokenized money market funds. This initiative complements the crypto strategy pursued by the bank in recent years, which includes launching Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana trading via E*Trade, as well as several ETPs on these cryptocurrencies between April and summer 2026. Morgan Stanley nonetheless remains behind its competitors JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs, which deployed their private blockchains Onyx and GS DAP as early as 2020 and 2022 respectively. The Digital Asset Lab nonetheless signals the growing commitment of major traditional financial institutions toward tomorrow’s tokenized finance.
