Micron pauses $4.5 billion Taiwan chip plant amid union dispute

Micron Technology has paused construction of its Fab 11E semiconductor plant in Taoyuan, Taiwan, a facility budgeted at between $3 billion and $4.5 billion. The company cited growing uncertainty in its negotiations with the Taoyuan union, which represents 2,300 to 3,000 workers out of roughly 3,000 employees at the site. The dispute followed a warning strike on October 22, 2026, the first strike in Taiwan’s semiconductor sector. The union is seeking a one-time bonus worth 83 months of salary and a share of quarterly operating profits, while Micron considers its counteroffers inadequate. The delay could constrain Micron’s ability to meet AI-driven memory demand and weaken its competitive position against Samsung and SK Hynix.
