Michael Burry Warns of 1987-Type Crash as S&P 500 Hits Record High

Investor Michael Burry, famous for predicting the 2008 housing collapse, warns that US stocks may be near a major top and could suffer a 1987-type crash, despite the S&P 500 hitting a new record of 7,736.52 points. The S&P 500 gained 1.79% and the Nasdaq Composite reached a record high of 26,584.99 on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. Burry maintains his short positions on Nvidia, Tesla, Palantir and other AI-linked names, believing that AI infrastructure demand depends on potentially unsustainable financing. His only losing trade is against Nvidia, which will report earnings on August 26 and for which nearly all analysts still rate the stock a buy.
