Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, from the Northern District of California, is presiding over a trial against Meta brought by a coalition of 29 U.S. attorneys general. The authorities accuse Meta of deliberately designing addictive features like infinite scroll and autoplay to hook young users despite known risks, as well as collecting information on children without parental consent. Meta has estimated potential penalties at $1.4 trillion, and the trial, expected to last six to seven weeks, could force the company to alter its advertising algorithms, which generate 98% of its revenue. Beyond this case, Gonzalez Rogers is overseeing the consolidation of nearly 3,000 lawsuits against Meta, TikTok, Snap and YouTube over alleged harms to children and teens.
