Malaysia’s bonds attract record inflows in August on AI optimism

Foreign investment inflows into Malaysian bonds hit a record in August, reaching 3.6 billion ringgit toward the end of the month after 1.9 billion mid-month according to Kenanga Investment Bank. Malaysia approved 218.5 billion ringgit in investments during the first half of 2026, with 44 percent directed toward data center and cloud computing projects for AI workloads. The country now boasts the largest pipeline of data center projects in Southeast Asia, with the goal of becoming an AI nation by 2030. Simultaneously, 10-year MGS yields rose by 16 basis points in August, the largest increase in two years, while Bank Negara Malaysia maintained its policy rate at 2.75 percent for over a year.
