Live: Binance hack, stolen funds, freezes and investigation

Share

Between 9:10 p.m. and midnight on October 29, a hacker stole approximately $6.3 billion from Binance hot wallets across nine blockchains, making it the largest theft in cryptocurrency history. According to Binance, the attack reportedly began with the compromise of a DevOps engineer’s computer, with no private-key leak identified. Around $3 billion has been frozen, while the thief converted several tokens into ETH, including 70,480 ETH, to make them less vulnerable to blocking. Chainalysis and TRM Labs have attributed the attack to the North Korean TraderTraitor group, previously linked to the Bybit theft, but Binance has not officially named any culprit. The platform restored deposits, suspended withdrawals to strengthen security and expects to resume them within 48 hours, while promising to cover all losses through its SAFU fund and company resources.
