Italy’s inflation hits 5.4%, outpacing the U.S. and China, as a farmers’ revolt empties shelves of pasta and mozzarella

Italian inflation reached 5.4% in October, its highest level in more than three years, compared with 3.7% in the United States and 0.9% in China. More than 50 cities hosted demonstrations against living costs and military spending, coordinated by the USB union, while farmers, truck drivers, students and taxi drivers blocked roads, ports and fuel depots. The blockades disrupted supplies of buffalo mozzarella and pasta-making ingredients, wasting about one million liters of milk and causing three million euros in lost mozzarella production in a single day. Energy prices surged 31.4% year over year, while diesel costs roughly one-third more than before the war with Iran. Giorgia Meloni’s government approved 175.2 million euros in aid, bringing total tax relief to 540 million euros, before southern pickets were lifted.
