Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, testified on Tuesday at a federal courthouse in Oakland, California, during a social media addiction trial, stating he does not encourage his team to hide information that could pose legal risks. This landmark trial is being co-led by the attorneys general of California, Colorado, New Jersey and Kentucky, representing a bipartisan coalition of 29 attorneys general. The plaintiffs allege that Meta violated the federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and are seeking penalties that could reach 200 billion dollars. Mosseri also acknowledged that Meta had restricted the number of employees who could access certain internal research following whistleblower Frances Haugen’s 2021 disclosures.
