India has suspended the proposed integration of its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Alipay+, Ant International’s cross-border payments network. The link would have allowed Indian travelers to pay at over 150 million merchants worldwide using UPI, which processes nearly 18 billion domestic transactions per month. However, national security concerns, data protection worries, and geopolitical tensions with China since the 2020 Ladakh border standoff have stalled the project. Without an Alipay+ deal, Indian travelers will continue relying on traditional credit and debit cards abroad, facing higher fees and less favorable exchange rates.
