Home heating oil prices in the United States are expected to average $5.26 per gallon this winter, a 34% increase from last year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Average household spending on heating oil is projected to reach $2,115 from November through March, approximately 21% higher than last year. This surge is driven by a tight global market for distillate fuels due to refinery disruptions in Russia and the Middle East, as well as reduced fuel exports from China. In contrast, households using natural gas (-9%) and propane (-3%) are expected to see lower bills this winter. In Massachusetts, heating oil prices have already jumped 73% to $6.12 per gallon, and 79% in Maine.
