Greece has adopted a 10% tax on cryptocurrency capital gains and a separate 15% levy on income from staking and decentralized finance. The legislation, approved by parliament on November 5, will take effect on January 1, 2027, and provides an exemption for annual gains of up to €500. Eligible losses may be carried forward for five years to offset future gains, while the taxation of crypto-to-crypto swaps remains unresolved. Investors will also have a 12-month window to voluntarily declare past cryptocurrency gains without late-filing penalties or interest, subject to specified conditions. Further transparency and audit directives are expected in the coming weeks, and the government cannot yet estimate potential tax revenue because many Greek investors use foreign exchanges.
