GoPro shares surge as AI hardware company Starman Optical plans $285M acquisition

Starman Optical, a manufacturer of optical transceivers for AI data centers, announced a merger agreement with GoPro on September 1, 2026. The offer values GoPro’s outstanding shares at $285 million in cash, or approximately $1.14 per share, representing a 30% premium over the previous close. GoPro shares surged as much as 80% in pre-market trading before settling around 40 to 50% higher by the close. YouTuber Mark « Markiplier » Fischbach also revealed an 8.5% stake, making him the company’s largest outside investor. Once completed, the deal will give Starman Optical a 90% stake in the combined entity, with existing shareholders retaining approximately 10% equity.
