Fenerbahce defeated Olympique Lyonnais 3-1 on aggregate in the Champions League play-off round to qualify for the league phase. In the first leg in Istanbul, Lyon took the lead through Lois Openda (40th minute) before Mason Greenwood equalised for the Turkish side (47th minute). In the second leg at Groupama Stadium on August 26, Archie Brown and Mason Greenwood scored the goals in a 2-0 away victory. Lyon, seven-time French champions, now drop to the Europa League and miss out on both the prestige and the financial rewards of the Champions League.
