Ex-OpenAI engineer pleads not guilty to spying charges

Abdulrahman Alfozan, a former OpenAI engineer and Saudi national, has pleaded not guilty to using a device to intercept communications within the company’s offices. He was arrested last month after an encrypted audio recorder was found in a conference room. The U.S. Department of Justice has found no evidence that he accessed or exported sensitive information, including model weights, source code, or customer data. The charges carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Prediction markets assign a 22% probability to an accusation tied to Saudi Arabia and 4.2% to one tied to Russia, while developments in the legal case could change those assessments.
