Europol arrests suspected KillSec leader, a 16-year-old Romanian teenager linked to 500 ransomware attacks

Spanish police arrested a 16-year-old Romanian teenager in Alicante identified by Europol as the administrator of the ransomware group KillSec, responsible for approximately 500 successful attacks and the theft of 110 terabytes of data. Operation KillSwitch, led by Hamburg’s criminal police, resulted in the arrest of two additional suspects in the United Kingdom and Romania, along with the seizure of five central servers and eight searches across four countries. A Dutch national was indicted in Puerto Rico for publishing 180 gigabytes of stolen medical records and faces up to ten years imprisonment in the United States. Ransoms were demanded in cryptocurrency and Europol’s tracing teams are following the money trail, while ransomware payments dropped by 35 percent in 2024 to reach 813 million dollars according to Chainalysis.
