The Ethereum Foundation launched zkAPI on Ethereum mainnet on October 1, a system enabling users to pay for AI services without linking their identity to their queries. Users deposit credits into a vault contract on Ethereum and receive capped, short-lived API keys through zero-knowledge proofs without revealing their identity to the AI provider. This solution was developed in collaboration with the Open Anonymity Project and builds on a proposal from Davide Crapis, who leads the foundation’s dAI team, and Vitalik Buterin. The experimental protocol uses OpenRouter to provide access to hundreds of AI models through a system where the provider sees the queries and the payment layer sees the spending, without being able to link the two.
