The FBI arrested on October 9 Abdulrahman Alfozan, an engineer at OpenAI since July 2025, suspected of hiding an encrypted audio recorder behind a TV in a leadership meeting room at OpenAI’s San Francisco offices. The company claims it used its own AI models to identify the suspect, who had used internal tools and a chatbot account to prepare his act, including asking how to build a continuous audio recorder with Wi-Fi connectivity and how to encrypt an SD card. OpenAI states it has no evidence of exfiltration of model weights, source code, or customer data. The suspect, a 35-year-old Saudi national, faces charges of attempted interception of oral communications and risks up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.
