Crypto scammers hijack Microsoft’s official X account to push a fake Clippy token

For approximately thirty minutes on Thursday, October 2, 2026, Microsoft’s official X account, which has over 13 million followers, was hijacked by unknown attackers who used it to promote a fraudulent cryptocurrency token called $Clippy. The attackers changed the account’s profile picture and interacted with an impersonator account claiming a connection to Clippy, the nostalgic virtual assistant character associated with Microsoft. Microsoft regained control within approximately thirty minutes, confirmed the unauthorized access, removed the misleading posts, and issued a statement denying any authorization, sponsorship, or endorsement of the token. No immediate impact was observed on Microsoft shares or digital assets, but this incident follows a similar hijacking of the Microsoft India account in 2024.
