Cosmos Labs Urges EVM Chains To Halt As Shared Bug Drains Three Networks

Share

Cosmos Labs on Tuesday urged public blockchains running a version of its Cosmos EVM module below v0.6.2 or v0.7.2 to immediately halt and upgrade. Three chains using this open-source codebase — MANTRA, TAC and KiiChain — were attacked between Aug. 20 and Aug. 22. On KiiChain, an attacker drained 148 million KII, worth roughly $9.7 million, repeating the same technique 18 times against different targets. TAC saw 2,985,651,403 TAC moved (about 62% of circulating supply) after exploiting a vulnerability in the Cosmos EVM precompile layer. MANTRA is back online while TAC and KiiChain remain offline. Cosmos Labs’ disclosure of the fix, published publicly on Aug. 19 without advance notice to affected chains, has drawn sharp criticism.
