Coinbase’s former legal chief Paul Grewal joins AI company Cognition

Paul Grewal, who guided Coinbase through its historic SEC lawsuit, will leave his role as chief legal officer on July 31, 2026, after nearly six years at the platform. He will join Cognition AI, the company behind the autonomous engineering agent Devin, as its first chief legal and global affairs officer starting August 2026. Prior to Coinbase, he served as a US magistrate judge for the Northern District of California and was deputy general counsel at Facebook. Molly Abraham, formerly Coinbase’s vice president of legal, will succeed him. This appointment reflects Cognition’s anticipation of increased regulatory pressure on AI companies.
