Patrick Steven Yaroch, a former supervisory special agent at FBI Headquarters Counterintelligence and Espionage Division, is accused of stealing 925,426 dollars in cryptocurrencies from seized wallets belonging to an adversarial nation. Court records state that he claimed he was frustrated the FBI could not or would not act against adversarial cryptocurrency accounts, and decided to take matters into his own hands. He confessed to a Department of Justice employee that he accessed FBI systems to retrieve keys needed to transfer funds to his personal wallets. He faces two felony charges, each carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. He was fired from the FBI on July 31 and investigations are ongoing.
