Citigroup and Coinbase have announced a strategic partnership to connect traditional banking infrastructure with blockchain payments. The two groups are targeting institutional clients and aim to facilitate conversions between traditional currencies and digital assets, with stablecoins as the main focus. Citi brings over 300 clearing networks across 94 markets, while Coinbase provides its crypto infrastructure and blockchain access. The goal is to offer transfers available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, outside traditional banking hours, and to reduce friction in cross-border payments. This partnership is part of Citi’s broader strategy, which already includes Citi Token Services and the planned launch of a proprietary stablecoin through a consortium of 21 companies expected in the first half of 2027.
