A test conducted by Bloomberg and testing firm Vals.ai compared US and Chinese AI models’ ability to build a fictional coffee e-commerce website. DeepSeek’s V4-Pro model completed the task for under $4, while Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 model charged nearly $49, a roughly 92% price difference. DoorDash has already shifted workloads to cheaper Chinese AI models after determining that the quality met its standards. By mid-2026, Chinese tools accounted for 41.4% of generative AI downloads on Hugging Face, and Chinese models had surpassed US models in market share on the OpenRouter platform.
