Millions of EU citizens already send messages through systems that scan them. Most large platforms currently use voluntary scanning, making this a present reality rather than a future risk for most users. Lawmakers extended the ePrivacy directive derogation until April 2028. Privacy advocates warn that a narrow legal purpose still requires broad technical access. End-to-end encryption could be next in line since providers would first have to decrypt traffic to comply with the new rules.
